Pigmentation Correction Aftercare: First 7 Days & What to Avoid (plus our laser treatment for hair removal clients ask about, too)
By Laser Center of New England | August 8, 2026
We’re right in Downtown Thomaston around the town green and Main Street business district. Aftercare should fit real life, not take over your week.
The single biggest rule after Pigmentation Correction is simple: keep the treated skin out of direct sun. In our clinic, we’ve seen how much that one habit protects results, and we hear it back in real terms, like noticing a “big difference, even many months later” after just a couple laser sessions. So right after your visit, keep the area clean and hydrated, use a broad-spectrum mineral SPF 30+ every two hours when you’re outdoors, skip makeup for 24 to 48 hours, and avoid heavy sweating, swimming, and exfoliants for at least 3 to 7 days.
First 24 to 48 hours: calm skin, no heat, no “testing” products
Pigmentation Correction is a 60-minute laser session we use to target age spots, sun damage, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The goal is brighter, more even-looking skin. In the first day or two, your job is to protect the area while it settles.
Quick 24-48 hour checklist: Gentle cleanse, gentle moisturizer, mineral SPF if you’re outside, and avoid heat and friction. Mild redness, swelling, or sensitivity can happen and usually fades within a few hours to a few days.
Do this right away
- Wash with a fragrance-free, gentle cleanser. Pat dry. No scrubbing.
- Moisturize with a simple, non-fragranced moisturizer. Keep skin comfortably hydrated.
- If you’re outdoors, use a broad-spectrum mineral SPF 30+ and reapply every two hours.
Avoid this for 24-48 hours
- Makeup on the treated area (give it 24 to 48 hours).
- Hot showers directly on the area, saunas, hot tubs, and anything that spikes heat in the skin.
- Retinoids, acids, scrubs, or “tingly” products. If it stings, it’s not the time.
Days 3 to 7: the “don’t pick it” week that protects your pigment result
This is where most people accidentally sabotage great work. You’re back to regular life, but your skin is still doing its thing. If you’re walking around Downtown Thomaston near the town green and Main Street business district, it’s easy to get more sun exposure than you think, even on a quick errand run.
We see a lot of success when clients keep aftercare simple and consistent. Several people tell us they noticed a big change after just one or two sessions, and that the improvement stuck around. That’s the lane we want you in.
The big 3 to avoid for at least 72 hours (often closer to a week): heavy sweating, swimming, and exfoliation. Heat, chlorine, and friction are common triggers for irritation and pigment rebound.
Sun rules in New England, even when it’s “not that sunny”
New England sun and humidity can sneak up on you, especially in summer afternoons. If you’re outside, mineral SPF every two hours is non-negotiable. Add a hat and sunglasses when you can. And skip tanning completely. A tan after pigment work is like taking a highlighter to the very thing we’re trying to fade.
Peeling, darkening, or flaking can happen
Some people notice mild flaking or a slightly darker look to spots before they lighten. Let it shed naturally. Don’t pick, scratch, or “help it along.” If you pull it off early, you can irritate the skin and increase the chance of uneven pigment.
The simple routine we like after Pigmentation Correction (no fancy product list)
You don’t need a dozen steps. You need the right ones, done consistently. Our best outcomes usually come from people who keep things gentle and don’t bounce between new products all week.
- Cleanser: fragrance-free, no scrubs, no acids.
- Moisturizer: gentle and boring is good. If your skin feels tight, apply a bit more often.
- Sunscreen: broad-spectrum mineral SPF 30+ (zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide). Reapply every two hours when outdoors.
- Pause actives: hold retinoids, exfoliating acids, and strong vitamin C until skin looks and feels fully settled.
If you’re juggling kids, work, and weekend errands around Thomaston, this routine is meant to be doable between everything else. And if you’re driving in from Watertown, Plymouth, Torrington, Harwinton, Litchfield, or Burlington, the same four-season rules apply. Sun protection is a year-round habit here.
When to reach out to our Thomaston team (and when it’s just normal healing)
A little redness, swelling, or sensitivity is common and usually settles within a few hours to a few days. If you’re unsure, ask. We’re big on explaining things clearly and making sure you feel comfortable before, during, and after, and that’s a theme we hear back again and again.
“He is incredibly thorough, explaining every step of the process from start to finish, leaving no questions unanswered.”

Pigmentation Correction details: 60 minutes, $225, and results that build
Our Pigmentation Correction session is 60 minutes and $225. We use laser treatments designed to reduce hyperpigmentation, sun spots, and uneven tone. Some people see a noticeable change quickly. Others build results over a series, especially with stubborn sun damage or melasma. Either way, aftercare is what keeps your progress moving forward instead of bouncing backward.
And yes, we also get questions about laser treatment for hair removal. Aftercare basics overlap, like sun avoidance and gentle care, but hair removal has its own timing and skin rules. If that’s on your list, bring it up at your visit and we’ll walk you through a plan that makes sense for your skin.
