Skin rejuvenation aftercare: what to do after Skin Rejuvenation & Tightening
By Laser Center of New England | October 15, 2026
I’ve had people tell me they saw a big difference even many months later after just a couple laser sessions, and aftercare is a huge part of protecting that kind of result. Right after Skin Rejuvenation & Tightening, the single most important rule is this: keep treated skin cool, clean, and sun-protected. For the first 48 to 72 hours, avoid heat and sweating, skip pools and hot tubs, and keep your skincare gentle so your skin can calm down and rebuild evenly.
Quick context: Skin Rejuvenation uses a combination of laser and light-based technologies to address wrinkles, sun damage, and tone irregularities, leaving the skin smoother and more radiant. Sessions are typically 30 to 60 minutes and in our Thomaston office they’re $350.
First 24 to 48 hours: keep heat, sweat, and friction off the area
This is the window where people accidentally irritate their skin and then wonder why it looks red longer than expected. If you’re heading back out around Downtown Thomaston around the town green and Main Street business district, keep it simple. Run errands, then let your skin rest.
Do this
- Use cool compresses if you feel warm or puffy. Gentle is the goal.
- Cleanse with a mild, fragrance-free cleanser and lukewarm water. Pat dry, don’t rub.
- Apply the ointment or moisturizer I recommended to you. Keep your barrier comfortable.
- Use broad-spectrum SPF 30+ every morning. If you’re outside at all, add a hat.
Avoid this
- No heavy sweating for 48 to 72 hours. That includes vigorous workouts and hot yoga.
- Skip hot showers, saunas, and hot tubs. Heat tends to keep redness around.
- No pools, lakes, or ocean. Chlorine and bacteria are a bad combo for freshly treated skin.
- Hold off on makeup if your skin feels sensitive or looks flushed. If you do wear it, keep it light and clean.
Schedule tip: If you can, plan your treatment so you can have a low-key evening after. A calm night, early shower (lukewarm), and good sleep usually makes the next day easier.
Days 3 to 7: redness, dryness, and flaking are common, don’t chase them
In the first week, skin often looks a little pink, feels dry, or starts flaking. That doesn’t mean something went wrong. It usually means your skin is turning over. This is where people get tempted to scrub or “speed it up.” Don’t. I do meticulous work, and the best results come when you protect the skin long enough for it to settle.
If you’re treating sun damage, freckles, or uneven tone, you might also notice areas look darker before they look lighter. That’s a normal pattern with many laser and light-based treatments, and it’s one reason I spend time explaining each step so you’re not caught off guard.
Keep doing
- Gentle cleanse once or twice daily and moisturize regularly. Dry indoor heat in Connecticut, especially in fall, makes this more important than people think.
- SPF every day, even when it’s cloudy. Fall sun in New England still triggers pigment.
- Let any flaking shed on its own. No picking. No exfoliating tools.
Put these on pause for 1 to 2 weeks
- Retinoids and strong acids (glycolic, salicylic, lactic) unless I specifically cleared them for you.
- Scrubs, cleansing brushes, microdermabrasion, or anything “polishing.”
- Waxing on the treated area.
If you’re trying to keep weekend plans like a walk, this week is usually manageable as long as you avoid sun exposure and sweating. Shade, hat, SPF, and keep it comfortable.
Post-laser skin care that actually protects your results for 4+ weeks
After Skin Rejuvenation & Tightening, I want your routine boring in the best way. Gentle cleanser, simple moisturizer, and daily SPF are the backbone. The goal is to keep inflammation low so your tone stays even and your texture improves steadily.
My simple aftercare routine (by product type)
- Cleanser: fragrance-free, non-foaming or gentle foaming, lukewarm water only.
- Moisturizer: fragrance-free, barrier-supporting cream or lotion. Reapply when you feel tightness.
- Sunscreen: broad-spectrum SPF 30+ every morning for at least 4 weeks. If you’re outdoors, reapply.
- Makeup: keep it minimal until redness calms. Clean brushes and sponges only.
If you’re coming in from Watertown, Plymouth, Torrington, Harwinton, Litchfield, or Burlington, keep SPF in your car or bag. It’s the easiest way to avoid “oops” sun exposure between errands.
When to text or call me: what’s normal vs what I want to know about
Most people do great with mild redness, warmth, or flaking. I’m also big on making sure you feel informed. People regularly tell me I take my time, answer questions, and never rush, and that doesn’t stop once you walk out the door.

Reach out the same day if you notice any of the following:
- Blistering, pus, or increasing pain
- Fever or feeling unwell
- Redness that spreads or gets worse after the first 48 hours
- Skin color changes that keep deepening instead of settling
